Description
Pipe Clamps:
There are two acceptable types of pipe you can use with pipe clamps: galvanized pipe and black steel pipe—the same type traditionally used for gas lines. Either will work fine, but the black pipe is less expensive, which makes it the preference for woodworkers on a strict budget. Furthermore a common use of clamps in woodworking is for edge gluing; several boards being joined edge to edge to produce a wider surface such as a table top or cabinet components. Pipe clamps can be used to assemble the four sides of boxes or cabinets.
General:

Hence Using the average of the editors’ clamping forces, this could be supplied by around nine heavy-duty bar clamps, a dozen 3⁄4-in. pipe clamps, or 26 quick-grip clamps. Obviously it would be hard to fit 26 clamps along a 36-in. board, so add some more powerful clamps if you have them. Pipe clamps are best suited for edge clamping, these provide a lot more stability than any other form of clamps. But it lags behind on the fact that it can’t hold the workpieces perpendicularly. … Moreover there are only two parts basically, the adjustable jaw and the threaded pipe through the jaw. That’s all there is to it.
